DOUGLAS ROTH is America’s leading authority on Japanese pruning techniques. After graduating from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, he served for 6 years as a U.S. Naval Officer in The Philippines, Hong Kong, and Japan. In 1988 he resigned his commission and established The Isshiki Zoo, a private English language school in Hayama, Japan.

The first foreigner licensed to practice gardening in Japan

After passing the Japanese National Language test, he began a traditional five-year gardening apprenticeship in Kamakura, Japan, and became the first foreigner ever licensed to practice gardening in Japan. His company, ROTH Tei-en, publishes The Journal of Japanese Gardening, and designs and maintains Japanese Gardens throughout North America.


Tamao Goda

Artist, Illustrator, and Professional Gardener

TAMAO GODA is an artist, illustrator, and professional gardener. Daughter of famous Japanese artists Sawako Goda and Tomio Miki, she has lived in many unusual places, including Egypt, New York City, and Kohchi, Japan. A graduate of Hosoh University, she worked in Kamakura with master gardeners Susumu Saito and Yoshiyuki Goto.

Illustrator, Japanese Language Research

In 1996, she moved to America and helped establish ROTH Tei-en. She creates all of the illustrations for The Journal of Japanese Gardening, and is responsible for all of ROTH Tei-en’s Japanese language research and correspondence. Her interests include gourmet cooking, music, and the Natural Sciences.
