More about The Journal of Japanese Gardening

Pruning Techniques, Important Design and Maintenance Secrets

While many foreigners under-estimate the importance of maintenance in Japanese Gardens, we at THE JOURNAL OF JAPANESE GARDENING feel that the essence of a Japanese Garden lies in its many years of care. While it is certainly important to start with a good design and proper rock placement, the skillful pruning of black pine and other Japanese Garden trees is what makes most Japanese Gardens successful. With this in mind, each JOURNAL issue discusses both basic and advanced pruning techniques, as well as other important design and maintenance secrets that are never mentioned in Japanese Garden "coffee table" books.

Landscape gardening is a 1000 year-old Art form in Japan, and gazing upon and elegant, carefully maintained Japanese Garden is a breathtaking experience. The special beauty of Japanese Gardens is no secret, but the techniques needed to design, build, and especially maintain Japanese Gardens are not clearly understood outside of Japan. We hope to bridge the gap.
